A renewable energy marketing agency for ICPs, HV contractors and battery storage firms

Grid connections, HV networks, BESS and solar EPC and O&M. The shortlist in this market is short, a won contract runs to six figures, and in storage about half of what buyers read about suppliers is written by somebody else.

“ICP for 11kV connection”

What came back

The NERS register ranked first, listing every accredited provider without ranking any. Below it were seven ICPs' own pages and two product pages from a cable maker. One of the ICP pages was a 2017 explainer from a firm since reported wound up.

Our readingThe register decides who may do the work, but no firm's page carried the buyer to it, so the shortlist is whoever wrote the clearest page about themselves.

A renewable energy marketing agency should get a grid or storage firm onto the shortlist when a buyer asks who to use, and count the enquiries that follow. KS Media is a UK energy marketing agency for independent connection providers, HV contractors, and BESS and solar EPC and O&M firms with 10 to 249 staff. We record what your buyers are shown when they search or ask an AI assistant and what those answers are built from, then write the pages and earn the listings, register links and press coverage that put you on the list.

Who this is for

ICPs doing contestable connection work by voltage, HV contractors maintaining private networks and substations, and the EPC and O&M contractors who build and run battery storage and solar sites. Typically 10 to 249 staff, on contracts that run to six figures.

Your buyers are developers and asset owners, housebuilders and landlords who need a new supply and could use an ICP instead of the DNO, estates teams with an HV network to maintain, and procurement leads with a framework to fill. Most of them ask in words that are not yours.

Switchgear, UPS and generator firms have their own page: power equipment and critical power.

What your buyers ask

On 1 October 2026 we ran ten buyer questions from this market once each, five about connections and five about storage, and recorded every result in order. The two halves came back made of very different material.

What ICP answers are made of

The five connection questions returned 48 results. Twenty-nine were firms describing themselves: 27 ICPs' own pages and two from a cable maker. Four named an ICP from the outside: the NERS register twice, and the same undated top-ten list, with no stated method, twice.

The register is public, needs no login, and on 1 October listed 538 providers, filterable by region, voltage and scope, and site type. It ranks nobody. It came first on both questions that used the scheme's own words, “NERS accredited ICP list” and “ICP for 11kV connection”, and did not appear on the three a buyer would type without that vocabulary.

All five ICPs we checked from these results claim NERS accreditation on their own pages. None links to its register entry or gives a certificate number. The full sample is in which ICPs does AI recommend.

What BESS answers are made of

Storage is the one market we sampled where third parties carry the names. Of 46 results for the five BESS questions, 22 were lists, research, trade press or a press release naming specific firms, the most of any set. Only 21 were firms' own pages, four of them overseas.

“top BESS contractors UK”

What came back

Seven of nine results were lists or research by third parties: a market-data firm, a welfare hire firm, a ranking site that sells AI visibility reports, a market research firm and a database seller. One contractor appeared on its own page, and one battery maker.

Our readingIn storage the shortlist is already being written by third parties, and the firms on it are the ones somebody chose to list, not necessarily the ones best placed to do the work.

Search results sampled 1 Oct 2026 through a search tool that runs from the US, not Google UK; one run; nine results. Not an assistant answer. Method on /how-we-measure. Firms and publishers described, not named.

Eight of the ten list appearances came from businesses whose main trade is something else, one of them a portable toilet and welfare hire firm. O&M was thinner still: on “BESS O&M companies UK” one UK specialist appeared, and three US firms took the other supplier places. The detail is in who writes the list of BESS O&M companies.

The third parties that count in this niche

Fees are as published on each body's own pages on 1 October 2026.

NERS, run by LRQA for the DNOs, is required for contestable connection work. LRQA does not publish its fee. Its register is the strongest third-party record an ICP has.

REA covers renewable and clean technology businesses, storage included. Its 2026 fees run by turnover: £1,850 a year at £500k to £1.5m, £3,250 at £1.5m to £3m, £4,850 at £3m to £5m, £8,850 at £5m to £10m. Its directory filters by technology.

Solar Energy UK takes solar businesses only. Its 2026 fees, excluding VAT, are £1,440 a year under £2m UK turnover, £3,890 at £2m to £10m and £6,780 at £10m to £24m. Its directory filters by activity, O&M and EPC included.

HV contractors can add ECA. Trade press already names firms in storage, with six articles in the BESS results. Neither REA nor Solar Energy UK appeared in any of the 94 results; every other register is compared in what the registers and trade bodies cost.

What the Diagnostic and the Engine do for a grid or storage firm

The Pipeline Diagnostic takes ten working days. We write five questions your buyers ask, in their words, such as the connection at your voltage or the O&M contract in your region, and run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI answers and screenshot each answer with its date. You get who is shortlisted instead and which lists and registers carry them, the faults on your site, the pipeline gap in enquiries and a 90-day plan. It is £2,500 at the founding rate to 31 December 2026, credited in full against month one of the Engine.

The Pipeline Engine runs from £3,000 a month, three months then rolling. It re-runs your five questions monthly and writes pages in the buyer's words, from IDNO versus DNO to what a BESS O&M contract covers. It keeps one description of your firm, with your register entry and scopes, consistent everywhere, and gets you onto the lists and into the trade press that already shape this market. Each month you see what the assistants said beside the enquiries that arrived.

Common questions

Marketing for grid and storage firms: questions

It gets the firm onto the shortlist when a developer, an estates team or a procurement lead asks who to use, and counts the enquiries that follow. That means recording what those buyers are shown and what it is built from, then building the pages and outside records that put the firm there.

It gets an ICP listed, which is not the same thing. On 1 October 2026 the public NERS register ranked first on the two ICP questions that used the scheme's own wording, and did not appear on the three that did not. None of the five ICP pages we checked linked to its register entry.

Mostly businesses with something else to sell. On 1 October 2026 the ten lists and rankings in our BESS results came from a portable toilet and welfare hire firm, a ranking site that sells AI visibility reports to the firms it ranks, a database seller, a market research firm, a battery manufacturer and a startup directory.

Both run public directories that filter by activity, and both cost from the low thousands of pounds a year at this size. Neither appeared in the 94 grid and storage results we recorded on 1 October 2026. A membership helps visibility once your own pages and your press coverage point to it.

The snapshot is free. The Pipeline Diagnostic is £2,500 at the founding rate for the first three clients to 31 December 2026, ten working days, credited in full against month one of the Engine. The Pipeline Engine runs from £3,000 a month, three months then rolling.
