Who writes the list of BESS O&M companies in the UK?

Five battery storage questions a buyer might ask, run once on 1 October 2026, returned 46 search results. Twenty-two were somebody else's list, research, article or press release naming specific firms, the most of any market we sampled that day. A market-data firm's free list of storage EPCs appeared on four of the five questions. Most of the other lists came from businesses that sell something else, including a portable toilet and welfare hire firm.

In switchgear, UPS and grid connections, the firms write almost everything a buyer reads about them. In storage, other people are writing the shortlist, and an assistant asked who to use will lean on those lists.

How the sample was taken

Five questions in UK phrasing: “BESS O&M companies UK”, “BESS EPC contractors UK”, “battery storage operations and maintenance contractor UK”, “top BESS contractors UK” and “who maintains battery energy storage systems UK”.

Each ran once on 1 October 2026. Every result was recorded in order and classified by kind of source. We opened every list to check who wrote it. Firms, list publishers and ranking sites are described by type and never named.

What this sample does not show

  • What any assistant said. These are search results, the material assistants draw on. No ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Google AI screenshot was taken.
  • What a buyer in Britain sees on Google UK. The search tool used runs from the United States, which may be part of why US firms appear; ranks will differ for a UK searcher.
  • Anything stable. Each question ran once, on one day.
  • A full page of ten. Four of the five questions returned nine results; counts are of what came back.
  • Every page's content. One trade press page refused access and one manufacturer's list returned “not found”; both are classified from their title and site.
  • Whether any listed firm is good at the work, or any unlisted firm is not.

The lists, research, trade press and press release add up to 22 of 46 results that name specific firms from the outside. The same day, the five ICP questions had four such results and the five critical power questions had one. No tender notice and no register appeared in the storage results.

The question that asked for a ranking came back almost entirely as other people's lists. On “top BESS contractors UK”, seven of nine results were lists or research by third parties, and only one contractor appeared on its own page.

The free list on four of five questions

The source that turned up most was a market-data firm's free list of GB battery storage EPCs, dated December 2024, which invites firms not on it to submit. It appeared on four of the five questions and ranked first on two: the nearest thing to a reference list in this sample.

Buyer question

“BESS EPC contractors UK”

What came back

The market-data firm's free EPC list ranked first. Below it were a trade press story, four EPC and civils firms' own pages (one firm twice), and two lists written by businesses with something else to sell.

Sources, by kind

  1. Own pageContractors describing themselves: 5
  2. ListA welfare hire firm's list and a ranking site's list: 2
  3. Market dataA free list of GB storage EPCs, at rank one: 1
  4. Trade pressA storage trade title: 1

Our readingA buyer asking for EPCs is handed a list first. Whether a contractor is on it decides more than anything on that contractor's own site.

Search results sampled 1 Oct 2026 through a search tool that runs from the US, not Google UK; one run; nine results. Not an assistant answer. Method on /how-we-measure. Firms and publishers described, not named.

Who wrote the other lists?

Ten results were listicles or rankings. We opened each one to see who published it.

A portable toilet and welfare hire firm23BESS and renewables contractors. One list, dated January 2026, names 25 firms and calls itself neutral, with no disclosure that the firm supplies these sites.
A ranking site12Twelve BESS EPC firms. It offers the firms it ranks a free AI visibility baseline and a paid report.

An overseas battery manufacturer11A top-ten of battery companies; the page returned “not found” when opened on 1 October.

Eight of the ten appearances came from businesses whose main trade is something else: welfare hire, AI visibility reports, databases and batteries. That does not make any list wrong. It does mean the shortlist an assistant finds for storage contractors was mostly drawn up by businesses outside the trade, and in one case by a business that sells reports to the firms it ranks.

None of these lists is an O&M list, and at least three do not list contractors at all.

Why is O&M so thin?

EPC has a reference list. O&M, the long contract after the build, has almost nothing.

Buyer question

“BESS O&M companies UK”

What came back

Trade press stories about projects and the market-data firm's EPC list took most of the page. One UK O&M specialist appeared on its own page, and three US firms filled the other supplier places.

  2. OverseasUS firms' own pages: 3
  3. Own pageA UK O&M specialist: 1

Our readingA UK buyer asking for O&M was shown more American suppliers than British ones. Any UK O&M firm with a clear page and one independent mention has room here.

Search results sampled 1 Oct 2026 through a search tool that runs from the US, not Google UK; one run; ten results. Not an assistant answer. Method on /how-we-measure. Firms described, not named.

The US firms may partly reflect where the search tool runs from. The next finding does not: on “who maintains battery energy storage systems UK”, not one O&M contractor appeared, only owners and developers, a renewables trade body's blog, a network operator's news, a comparison site and three lists.

The longer phrasing, “battery storage operations and maintenance contractor UK”, did better: mostly contractors' and operators' own pages, plus the market-data list and a developer's press release naming its O&M provider. One contractor page belonged to a storage EPC firm whose winding up was reported in a trade article that ranked second on the EPC question. Its page still ranked for maintenance.

What a BESS EPC or O&M firm can do

Get on the list that asks. The market-data firm's EPC list invites firms not on it to submit, and it appeared on four of five questions. For an EPC it is the single most visible third-party record in this sample.

Put real projects in the trade press. Six of the 46 results were trade articles, and a developer's press release naming its O&M provider ranked first on one question. A named project announced by the client gives an assistant a reason to repeat a contractor's name.

Own the O&M question. One UK specialist appeared where a UK buyer asked for O&M companies. A plain page explaining what a BESS O&M contract covers, from a UK firm that does the work, faces one UK specialist, a few US suppliers and some project news.

Use the directories, then point at them. Solar Energy UK's directory filters by O&M and EPC, and REA's by technology. Neither appeared in these results, so a listing does its work when your own pages and your trade coverage link to it.

And be wary of being ranked by someone who wants to sell you a report about your ranking.

This is the work in the grid and storage marketing programme. It starts with the Pipeline Diagnostic: your five buyer questions run through the assistants themselves, with dated screenshots and the sources behind each answer.

Quick answers

Which companies do BESS O&M in the UK?
We do not name firms, and the search results were a poor guide. On 1 October 2026 the question BESS O&M companies UK returned one UK O&M specialist on its own page, three US firms, five trade press stories about projects and a market-data firm's EPC list. Owner-operators' own O&M arms appeared on a related question.
Is there a list of BESS EPC contractors in the UK?
Yes. A market-data firm publishes a free list of GB battery storage EPCs, dated December 2024, and invites unlisted firms to submit. On 1 October 2026 it appeared on four of our five storage questions and ranked first on two. It lists EPCs, not O&M specialists.
Are the top BESS contractor lists independent?
Mostly not in any useful sense. Eight of the ten list appearances we recorded came from businesses whose main trade is something else: a portable toilet and welfare hire firm, a ranking site that sells AI visibility reports to the firms it ranks, a database seller and a battery maker. One list called itself neutral without disclosing a commercial link.
How does a BESS firm get onto these lists?
Start with the one that asks: the market-data firm's EPC list invites unlisted firms to submit. Then trade press, which carried six of the 46 results, with a real project write-up. Solar Energy UK and REA both run public directories that filter by activity, though neither appeared in these results.
Can these numbers be quoted?
Yes, with attribution to KS Media and a link to this page, provided the limits travel with them: five questions run once on 1 October 2026 through a search tool that runs from the US rather than Google UK, search results rather than assistant answers, and nine results rather than ten on four of the five.
